How to Draw a Bowling Ball

A bowling ball is a hard round object that is used to knock over bowling pins during a bowling game.

Although all bowling balls are spherical, they differ slightly based on the particular type of bowling sport they are being used for.

For instance, the balls used for ten-pin bowling are usually bigger and have three holes in a rectangular pattern: the upper two for two fingers and the lower one for the thumb. The holes help you with gripping the ball while playing the game.

The bowling balls for the other bowling types are generally smaller and do not have any holes. Their small size makes it easier to hold them in the palm of your hand.

How to Draw a Bowling Ball

To draw a bowling ball, simply follow the following steps:

  1. To get the shape of your bowling ball right, the first requirement is to draw a perfect circle.
  2. The next logical step is to draw the three holes where the fingers and thumb are inserted. Remember to draw two holes side-by-side and a third located underneath but slightly in the middle.
  3. The three holes you drew on the surface of your bowling ball should be colored in with a crayon or shaded in with your pencil or pen if you so desire.

With as simple as these three steps, you have successfully drawn a bowling ball.

It is necessary to note that since your bowling ball made provision for two fingers and a thumb, it is naturally assumed that the ball is the type used for ten-pin bowling. This is also the type of ball commonly illustrated in bowling books and other media.

Tools Needed to Draw a Bowling Ball

Some of the tools required in the illustration of a bowling ball include:

A computing system is only an option if you do not intend to draw your bowling ball by hand.

If you intend to use a computer though, you would probably need drawing applications like Corel Draw, Adobe Photoshop, Clip Studio, and Autodesk Sketchbook. Once you have downloaded any of these applications, then you have the necessary tool required to carry out this exercise.

For those who prefer to draw by hand, these are the two most important tools for drawing. To sketch your bowling ball, you need either a pencil or a pen.

Pencils are generally narrow and cylindrical tools that are made up of a thin piece of colored wax, graphite, or other identical substances that are sheathed in either wood or mechanical holder.

Pens, on the other hand, are instruments that normally consist of a nylon tip, metal nib, and ball and are contained in a plastic or metal holder.

Instead of a pencil or pen, you could also use a crayon to draw.

If you’d rather not though, it’s okay too. You can still use your pen or pencil to draw and a crayon to add color.

A crayon is a stick of pigmented wax or chalk that is encased in a wood holder and mainly used for coloring. They are often used for drawing too.

You will, of course, need a surface to draw on. That’s where the paper comes in.

A piece of paper is manufactured from fibrous materials or wood which are made into thin sheets that can be used for drawing, printing, or writing on.

Different Types of Bowling Balls

There are different types of bowling balls in line with the different types of bowling games. Bowling ball size also varies depending on the type.

Apart from the ball described above, you might also be interested in the following types of bowling balls:

Ten-pin Bowling Balls

This is the type we are already familiar with.

Ten-pin bowling balls are larger and have three holes. They usually weigh about 7.3 kg and measure between 21.59 cm to 21.83 cm.

Five-pin Bowling Balls

Five-pin balls are smaller than the ten-pin balls, have no holes, and weigh about 1.5 kg to 1.7 kg. In diameter, they measure about 12.1 cm to 12.7 cm.

Duck-pin Bowling Balls

Duck-pin bowling balls are smaller and lack finger holes. They are also similar to five-pin balls in specifications, weighing between 1.5 kg and 1.7 kg and measuring 12.1 cm to 12.7 cm in diameter.

Candle-pin Bowling Balls

These are probably the smallest bowling balls. Candle-pin balls weigh between 1.0 kg to 1.1 kg, measure between 11 cm to 22 cm in diameter, and have no holes.

Bowling balls have come a long way since bowling started not as a sport but as a fun pastime.

The material has changed from wood to rubber to polyester, but what the bowling ball looks like essentially remains the same. Whether you use a pen, pencil, or crayon to draw, all it takes is three simple steps to create that iconic image of a bowling ball which pretty much everyone knows.
